If you live in Cancún or are visiting and want to try pickleball, the good news is that it is one of the easiest racket sports to learn: within a couple of matches you understand the rules and start having fun. This guide takes you step by step from zero, with the particulars of playing in a Caribbean city. For the full rules, see our guide on how to play pickleball.
Step 1: understand the basics
Pickleball is played on a court like a badminton court, with a low net, a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. It is almost always played in doubles, the serve is underhand and the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. There is a zone near the net, the "kitchen", where you cannot volley. With those ideas you can start; the rest is learned by playing. The dimensions are smaller than a tennis court, and that closeness is exactly what makes rallies quick and fun from the first hour.
Step 2: get the minimum equipment
You need very little to start:
- A paddle. For the first few times, many venues and groups lend or rent one. When you decide to buy, a mid-range paddle is enough.
- Balls. There are indoor and outdoor balls; to play outside, look for outdoor ones. If you are unsure which to buy, ask what they use where you will play, because it helps to practise with the same one.
- Sports shoes with good lateral grip. Running soles are not ideal for changes of direction.
- Light clothing, a cap and a water bottle. In Cancún, these are not optional.
Step 3: find somewhere to play
- MeetAndPlay directory. Browse the pickleball courts in Cancún and the surrounding area in our directory and check each venue's details.
- Clubs and sports complexes. Ask whether they have pickleball courts, open-play hours or introductory classes.
- Shared courts. In some places pickleball is played on adapted spaces, with lines painted on courts for other sports. Confirm availability and hours before you go.
- Local groups. Ask on the city's sports social media and chats: many groups welcome beginners.
Because hours and availability change, always confirm directly with the venue before you set out.
Step 4: cope with the climate
Cancún is hot and humid much of the year. To play well and safely:
- Prefer early morning or the end of the day.
- Hydrate before, during and after.
- Wear sunscreen and a cap.
- Rest in the shade between matches and do not push on if you feel dizzy or extremely tired.
We have a full guide on playing in heat and humidity.
Step 5: join a reta
Pickleball is social by nature. The best way to learn is to play retas, where you rotate between many players and there is always someone ready to explain a rule. If you arrive alone, do not worry: someone will almost always pair up with you. Arrive with an open attitude and say you are new; the community is usually very welcoming. You do not need to arrive with a partner or a specific level: the custom is to mix players and change partners often.
On MeetAndPlay you can search open matches and filter by level. If you do not know yours, start with the beginner ones.
Step 6: learn the key shots
Do not try to master everything. These four shots take you a long way: Pick one shot a week and practise it in every match until it comes without thinking.
- The underhand serve, deep and uncomplicated.
- The deep return, to buy time and move up to the net.
- The dink, the soft shot into the kitchen that forces the opponent to pop the ball up.
- The third-shot drop, a soft shot from the back that lands in the opponent's kitchen and lets you move up.
Common beginner mistakes
- Stepping into the kitchen while volleying. The most frequent fault.
- Hitting everything hard. Pickleball is won with control more than power.
- Staying back. The net is where points are won.
- Forgetting the double-bounce rule. After the serve and the return, both teams must let the ball bounce before volleying.
If you are visiting
Many players try pickleball on a trip. If that is you, check hours and availability in advance, ask about loan equipment and bear in mind that the weather can change your plans. Ask about rules and costs directly at the venue: they vary. Arriving with time to spare lets you try a couple of sessions and leave wanting more before the trip ends.
What comes next?
When you have the basics, try classes, an americana or a social tournament. Keep playing with people of different levels and you will notice your game improving quickly. A good next step is learning to read the game: where your partner stands, where the opponent is looking and when to speed up or slow down.
