What's your padel level? Take the test in 2 minutesIn this guide
Cancún has plenty of padel courts; the hard part is getting four people together. You moved here, your friends stopped playing, your usual partner is injured, or you simply want to play more often than your group can. This guide explains, for Cancún specifically, the routes that work for finding a padel partner: open matches, retas and americanas, the clubs and WhatsApp groups. The clubs, courts and hours it mentions come from the club records behind our Cancún pages.
Before you look: know your level
Most matches that go wrong go wrong over level: one player is bored and another feels pressured. On MeetAndPlay the level runs from 0 to 7, in five bands:
- Getting started (0 to 2): you can hit the ball after it comes off the wall; your matches are in lessons and beginners' games.
- Making progress (2 to 3): you hold full points and defend from the back.
- Intermediate (3 to 4): you move up to the net with your partner and play close matches; the most common band.
- Advanced (4 to 5): you handle the bandeja and set the pace of the point.
- Competitive (5 to 7): you play tournaments and look for high-level games.
Look for matches within half a point or a point of your level, and if in doubt, pick the lower number: better to move up later than to spoil your first match with new people. Our guide to playing levels explains each band in more detail.
Open matches: the most direct route
An open match is a match with the court, time and club already set that is missing players. On MeetAndPlay you can browse Cancún's open matches, see each one's level range and join the one that suits you. If you have already booked and are one, two or three short, you post the match with the club, the time and the level you want, and other players of a similar level join.
The advantage over a loose message in a group is that the match says everything up front: where, when and for what level. Whoever joins knows what they are signing up for, and you do not have to explain it five times.
Post a day or two ahead: a slot announced in good time fills far more easily than one two hours away. The button at the end of this guide opens the app straight on Cancún's matches.
Retas and americanas
A reta is a casual, open match; many clubs also use the word for a session where you turn up alone and get paired as you go. An americana goes further: the pairs rotate, so in one morning you play with several different people. For someone looking for a partner it is the best format there is, because you try several players without commitment and leave with contacts at your level.
On MeetAndPlay, open retas and americanas across Mexico are in the retas section, and when there are retas posted in Cancún they also appear on the city's own page. Ask at reception, too, whether your club runs its own and on which day.
Cancún's clubs
Across Cancún and Costa Mujeres we list 11 clubs with padel and 65 padel courts. The ones with the most courts are Journey Padel Arena Cancún (24 courts), Utopía Padel Cancún (7 courts), and Puerto Cancún Padel (5 courts). More courts does not mean a better club, but it does mean more matches at the same time, and so more people to cross paths with.
Playing at the same club at the same time every week is the slowest but surest way to build a group: within a few weeks you recognise faces, and almost everything follows from there. Ask at reception whether they keep a list of players looking for a game, run group lessons by level or have someone who puts matches together.
If you can only play before work, these clubs open at 06:00 or earlier, at least on some days: Journey Padel Arena Cancún (06:00), One Padel Cumbres (06:00), Padel Sport Huayacán (06:00), Sportres MX (06:00), and Zona 5 Padel Club (06:00).
If you can only play at night, these stay open until 23:00 or later, at least on some days: Utopía Padel Cancún (23:30), Journey Padel Arena Cancún (midnight), One Padel Cumbres (23:00), Padel Sport Huayacán (23:00), The Court (23:30), and Sportres MX (midnight).
WhatsApp groups
Many clubs and groups of friends have one, and they are useful for filling a last-minute gap. They have two well-known flaws: they fill up with messages, and nobody really knows anybody's level, so the «anyone playing today?» message tends to end in an uneven match or in nothing.
Among the clubs on record, these take bookings directly over WhatsApp: Padel Club Cancún. Worth asking there whether they also run a players' group.
If you use a group, use it well: one complete message with the details an open match would carry for you.
A message that actually gets players
Whether in a group or in a posted match, these are the details that make someone say yes:
- The level, as a number or a band: «level 3 to 3.5», not «medium level».
- The day, the exact time and the length.
- The club, and whether the court is already booked. A match with a confirmed court fills sooner.
- How much each person pays and how, so it is not argued about at the end.
- How many places are missing. One is not the same as three.
And when someone helps you complete a match, return the favour next time: that is how lasting groups form.
If you are visiting
If you are in Cancún for only a few days, there is no time to build a group at a club: open matches are your best option. Our visitor's guide to playing padel in Cancún lists the clubs by distance from the Hotel Zone, with roofs and opening hours.
In short
Know your level, browse or post open matches ahead of time, sign up for retas and americanas to meet people, play at the same club at the same time and, if you use WhatsApp, send complete messages. Do that and finding a padel partner in Cancún stops being every week's problem.
