What's your padel level? Take the test in 2 minutesIn this guide
Isla Mujeres is a small island a short boat ride from Cancún, loved for its beaches, snorkelling and slow pace, and visitors who play padel at home often ask where they can play there. The honest answer comes first. Our records list no padel court in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. This guide says what the island does have on record for racket sports, where the nearest padel clubs are on the mainland, and how to plan a game around a ferry day. We print no prices, hours, ferry times or distances: none are on record.
What our records show
0 padel places are on record for Isla Mujeres. That is a statement about our data, not a promise about the island: a new court can open before anyone maps it. If you know of one, tell us and we will add it to the directory.
The municipality does appear in our records for other racket sports. Tennis is on record at 4 places with 5 courts in total, among them a tennis centre and some stand-alone courts mapped by volunteers. Pickleball is on record at a resort on the mainland side of the municipality:
- Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres: pickleball and tennis courts at a resort.
If you still want to play on the island
Tennis courts are the closest thing to padel on Isla Mujeres, and a tennis player picks padel up fast. The ball, the scoring and the footwork are familiar, and the walls are the only real novelty. Not every court on record is open to the public: a resort may keep its courts for its guests, and a stand-alone court may belong to a school or a neighbourhood. Ask at your hotel, and ask whoever runs the court, whether outside players can book.
If you want a racket sport that is easy to learn with friends, pickleball is a good second choice: it needs a smaller court, fewer people and less equipment. Our pickleball guides for Cancún and the Riviera Maya cover where to start.
A few beach sessions with a paddle and a soft ball on the sand are not padel, but they keep your eye in. Treat them as a warm-up for a real game on the mainland, not a replacement.
Where the nearest padel is
The nearest padel on record is on the mainland. Our records list 1 padel clubs in Costa Mujeres, the northern coast of Cancún across the water from the island, and 11 padel clubs in Cancún and Costa Mujeres together. Further south, Playa del Carmen has 8 padel places on record. Names, court counts and roofs are on those city pages and in our visitor guides, so we do not repeat them here.
Getting to the mainland means a boat, and the boat decides your day. Ferry schedules, ports and fares change, and we hold none of them, so check the operator's own channel on the day. Then plan the game around the last return crossing rather than the other way round, and leave a margin: missing the last boat is the one mistake that turns a padel game into an overnight stay.
If you sleep on the island and want to play more than once, consider moving your stay to the mainland for a night or two. A base near the club makes early-morning games easy and takes the ferry out of the equation.
How to plan a padel day from Isla Mujeres
Choose the club first and the time second. Check the court count and whether the courts are covered; in the rainy season an open court can lose your slot to a storm. Message the club on its own channel to confirm the price, the length of a slot and the cancellation rule before you cross.
Play early or after sunset. The coast is hot and humid, and the middle of the day is the worst time to be on a court. An early game also leaves the afternoon free for the beach and the boat back.
Go with your own pair if you can. If you are alone, post an open match on MeetAndPlay with the club and the time, so the other three players are found before you leave the island.
Think about the way back as well. Work out when your slot ends, how you get from the club to the ferry port and when the last boat leaves, and confirm a ride ahead of time. A padel match lasts about as long as the slot, and it is worth leaving a little time afterwards to drink water, change and chat with the other players, which is where the next games get organised.
If you travel as a group, split the cost of the court between the four of you from the start. Our guide to splitting the court payment explains simple ways to do it without anyone feeling awkward.
Pack light: a racket is optional because many clubs lend or rent them, but court shoes, a cap, water and sun protection are not. Leave valuables at the hotel and carry a little cash for the ride and the court desk.
How to book
Booking channels differ by club: a website, WhatsApp, Instagram messages or a phone call. MeetAndPlay does not take bookings at these clubs; you arrange the court with the club itself. Ask about rackets and balls: many clubs lend or rent them, so you do not need to travel with yours.
Finding a game
Padel needs four. On MeetAndPlay you can join an open padel match someone has already posted, or post your own with the club, the time and the level range you want. Say that you are a visitor and give your level honestly on the 0 to 7 scale, so the match is even.
If you have never played, start with our beginner guide to padel and our guide to the rules. The scoring is the same as tennis and most people sustain a rally after an hour.
In short
There is no padel place on record in Isla Mujeres. Pick a club in Cancún or Costa Mujeres, plan the game around the last ferry, confirm the details with the club, play in the cooler hours, and use MeetAndPlay to find the other players.
