Pickleball in Chapala: where to play

Where to play pickleball in Chapala: venues on record, which have a court count and a roof, and how to find an open game.

In this guide

Pickleball in Chapala is young and scattered. There is no single pickleball centre: the places on record differ in kind. This guide lists every named pickleball venue in our records for Chapala and says plainly what we do not know. Where a court count, a roof or an address is not on record, you will read that, not a guess.

What our records show

Our records list 4 named places with pickleball in Chapala. For 3 of them there is a pickleball court count on record, and those add up to 3 courts.

These are minimums: the total only adds what is on record, and the sport is growing fast. Venues open, close and change; confirm with the venue before you travel.

Venues with a court count on record

These are the venues whose pickleball court count we could source. The address, where shown, is exactly as the venue's own source gives it:

  • Hotel Real de Chapala Pickleball Courts: 1 pickleball court; roof not on record; recorded zone: Ajijic; listed with a website (no page of its own yet: too little on record).
  • Mel's Casa Social: 1 pickleball court; roof not on record (no page of its own yet: too little on record).
  • Tepalo Pickleball Club: 1 pickleball court; indoor or covered courts; listed with a website (no page of its own yet: too little on record).

More venues on record, without a court count

These places are recorded as offering pickleball, but no source we could cite gives how many courts. Some may mark pickleball lines on shared courts, so ask what is available and when:

  • Hotel Villa Montecarlo: court count not on record; roof not on record (no page of its own yet: too little on record).

For 3 of the places above we have no record of a roof either way. Ask before you plan around rain or sun.

Climate and the best hours

Chapala, on the lakeshore, has a mild climate nearly all year, which makes it comfortable for playing outdoors. What counts most is the summer rainy season, with afternoon storms.

Mornings are the safest bet in that season. Ask whether there are lights for the evening and what the rule is if rain interrupts the match, and bring a layer for the cool nights.

And if you can't find a game, post one: on MeetAndPlay you can open a match with your level and time so other players nearby can join.

How to get on a court

There is no standard. Some venues take bookings through a website, others over WhatsApp or Instagram messages or by phone, and a hotel or resort will fold pickleball into its own activity schedule. The lists above show which contact channels each venue has on record; try those first.

We do not quote prices, opening hours or ratings: none are on record for these venues. Ask what a court costs and for how long, whether paddles and balls are lent or rented, and what happens if it rains. MeetAndPlay does not take bookings at these venues; you arrange the court with the venue itself.

What to bring

  • Court or tennis shoes with lateral grip. Running shoes slide on the quick side-to-side steps.
  • Your paddle if it travels well, or ask ahead whether the venue lends or rents one. Many people try the sport with a borrowed paddle.
  • Water, a towel and sun protection. A towel keeps the handle from slipping.
  • A few spare balls. Ask whether the venue supplies them, since pickleball uses a perforated plastic ball that cracks over time and is easy to lose between courts.
  • Your phone, charged. You will use it for the venue's booking channel, the map and the match chat with the other players.
  • A little cash. Some venues take payment at the counter, so confirm how to pay before you go.
  • A light layer and a cap. Courts can be windy or sunny depending on the hour, and you will cool down quickly between games when you stop moving.
  • A friendly attitude. Pickleball courts are social: many groups rotate players in and out, so ask politely whether you can join the next game and say that you are new if you are.
  • Patience with the rules. Scoring and the kitchen line near the net confuse everyone at first, so ask the other players to explain them before the first point.

Finding a game without a group

Pickleball is usually played in doubles, but it is one of the easier sports to join on your own: groups rotate partners, and regulars tend to welcome beginners. On MeetAndPlay you can join an open match someone has already posted, or post your own with the venue, the time and the level range. The button at the end of this guide opens the app on Chapala's matches.

If you are new, say so, and state your level honestly on the app's 0 to 7 scale so the match is even. Ask the venue whether it runs open play, retas or americanas where you turn up alone and get paired. To learn the rules first, read our beginner guide to pickleball.

If nobody has posted a match that fits, publish one for the next two or three days rather than for tonight: it gives other players in Chapala time to see it and fill the four spots. Once you have played, keep in touch with the people you met, because a regular group is the easiest way to keep playing every week.

You do not need expensive gear for your first sessions: a mid-range paddle, court shoes with good lateral grip and water are enough. Many venues lend or rent paddles, so ask before you buy. Warm up for a few minutes with soft dinks at the kitchen line before playing points, and let experienced players walk you through the two-bounce rule: it takes a couple of games to learn.

In short

Pickleball in Chapala is still concentrated in a handful of venues. Start with the counted list, confirm hours, price and access directly with the venue, and join or post an open match to get a game going.
