How a single-elimination bracket works

In a single-elimination bracket, whoever loses is out of the tournament and whoever wins advances to the next round, all the way to the final. If the number of pairs is not a power of 2 (8, 16, 32), the bracket is filled out with byes, which go to the top seeds.

Seeds and byes

Pairs are placed using the classic seeding order (1 against the last, 2 against the second to last...), so the top two never meet before the final and the top four never meet before the semifinals.

Tips for organizing it

List the pairs from strongest to weakest. If nobody has a ranking, shuffle the order and let chance hand out the byes.

With the consolation bracket, every pair that loses its first match plays at least twice; players appreciate that most in a one-day tournament.
