Pickleball is the racket sport turning up fastest in conversations, news stories and clubs across Mexico, yet the data on it is scarce and scattered. This page gathers what can actually be counted: how many places with pickleball are recorded, in which states and cities, how it compares with padel and tennis, and how incomplete the map still is. Each figure comes from the same code as our data pages and carries its date; when the directory grows, this page changes on its own.
The key figures, ready to quote
- 153 places with pickleball recorded in Mexico as of October 22, 2026, in 64 cities across 28 states.
- 148 pickleball courts counted at those places. There are fewer courts counted than places, and it is not a mistake: many places are recorded without saying how many courts they have, so they add one place and zero courts.
- Quintana Roo is the state with the most places with pickleball (17), and Ciudad de México the city with the most (8).
- The top three states, Quintana Roo, Sonora, and Jalisco, hold 31% of every place with pickleball.
- In 27 of the 64 cities with pickleball (42%) there is a single place recorded.
- Nationally there are 1.2 places with pickleball per million residents; the state with the highest rate is Baja California Sur (13.8).
- For every place with pickleball there are 3.7 with padel and 7.7 with tennis; pickleball is 8% of the places of the three racket sports.
- OpenStreetMap alone shows 14 places with pickleball: 9% of what the full directory records.
First, the honest part: the data is thin
Almost everything we know about pickleball in Mexico does not come from the open map. OpenStreetMap, the base many apps and studies use, had just 14 places tagged with pickleball in the snapshot of September 25, 2026. The rest, up to the directory's 153, are places we researched one by one in public sources: club websites, social media, league and association listings. The sources by domain are at meetandplay.mx/metodologia.
There is another reason pickleball is hard to count: many of its courts are not pickleball courts. They are tennis or basketball courts with pickleball lines painted over them, or spaces set up with a portable net on certain days. A map that records "tennis court" does not see that pickleball is played there on Tuesdays. That is why every figure on this page is a minimum, and probably an undercount.
Pickleball by state
The states with the most recorded places with pickleball as of October 22, 2026. The rate per million residents uses INEGI's 2020 Census and is only computed for states with 5 places or more (the rest show a dash):
- 1. Quintana Roo: 17 places with pickleball in 6 cities · 41 courts counted · rate: 9.1 per million residents
- 2. Sonora: 17 places with pickleball in 4 cities · 6 courts counted · rate: 5.8 per million residents
- 3. Jalisco: 14 places with pickleball in 6 cities · 15 courts counted · rate: 1.7 per million residents
- 4. Baja California Sur: 11 places with pickleball in 3 cities · 4 courts counted · rate: 13.8 per million residents
- 5. Guanajuato: 10 places with pickleball in 2 cities · 10 courts counted · rate: 1.6 per million residents
- 6. Estado de México: 9 places with pickleball in 6 cities · 6 courts counted · rate: 0.5 per million residents
- 7. Ciudad de México: 8 places with pickleball in 1 city · 7 courts counted · rate: 0.9 per million residents
- 8. Querétaro: 7 places with pickleball in 2 cities · 7 courts counted · rate: 3.0 per million residents
- 9. Baja California: 6 places with pickleball in 4 cities · 13 courts counted · rate: 1.6 per million residents
- 10. Nayarit: 6 places with pickleball in 2 cities · 10 courts counted · rate: 4.9 per million residents
In 4 of the 32 states we have not a single place with pickleball recorded: Colima, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, and Tlaxcala. That does not mean nobody plays there, only that nobody has recorded it yet.
Pickleball by city
The ten cities with the most recorded places with pickleball:
- 1. Ciudad de México (Ciudad de México): 8 places, 7 courts counted
- 2. Cancún (Quintana Roo): 6 places, 18 courts counted
- 3. Querétaro (Querétaro): 6 places, 7 courts counted
- 4. León (Guanajuato): 6 places, 0 courts counted
- 5. Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo): 5 places, 14 courts counted
- 6. Bahía de Banderas (Nayarit): 5 places, 10 courts counted
- 7. La Paz (Baja California Sur): 5 places, 2 courts counted
- 8. Los Cabos (Baja California Sur): 5 places, 2 courts counted
- 9. Hermosillo (Sonora): 5 places, 1 court counted
- 10. Puerto Peñasco (Sonora): 5 places, 0 courts counted
In 36 cities there are places with pickleball but no court with a published count. The list mixes tourist destinations, where the sport arrived first with visitors from the United States and Canada, with large cities where padel and tennis clubs are starting to add pickleball courts.
Pickleball against padel and tennis
With the same directory and the same date: tennis 1,173 places, padel 568 and pickleball 153. The gap is wide, but it does not compare like with like: tennis has sat in public parks and sports centres for decades, and padel had a wave of private clubs in recent years. Pickleball is still at the stage of shared courts and groups organised over WhatsApp, which are exactly what a map shows least.
What other sources say
In April 2025, Claro Sports published that pickleball in Mexico "has over 200 courts". Our 148 counted courts are 74% of that figure. Take it as a directional reference: we do not know how it was counted, or whether it includes shared or temporary courts. On the ground, the 15 clubs in Cancún and the Riviera Maya we checked by hand have 10 pickleball courts between them. The report with the open-map comparison is at meetandplay.mx/reporte-padel-mexico.
Prices: not enough data yet
To publish a price for a city we require rates from at least 3 clubs, and in pickleball no city reaches that minimum. We would rather say so than invent an average. What we can say is how it is charged: some clubs rent the court by the hour, others charge per person for open sessions, and in many parks it is free. The guide to what a pickleball court costs to rent explains what to ask.
How to cite these statistics
You can use these figures in your article, thesis or presentation without asking. We ask that you cite the source, give the data date and link this page, because the numbers change with every update and the link leads to the current version. A format that works:
MeetAndPlay, "Pickleball in Mexico statistics (2026)", data as of October 22, 2026. https://meetandplay.mx/en/guias/estadisticas-del-pickleball-en-mexico
If you quote the per-resident comparison of the three racket sports, link meetandplay.mx/datos/canchas-por-habitante too; if you quote the OpenStreetMap figure, meetandplay.mx/reporte-padel-mexico. The CSV tables are at meetandplay.mx/datos. And if you run pickleball in a city that is not listed, write to us: with pickleball, every place added really moves the figures.
Frequently asked questions
- How many pickleball courts are there in Mexico?
- As of October 22, 2026, our directory records 153 places with pickleball and 148 counted courts, in 64 cities. It is a minimum: many courts are shared with tennis or basketball and appear on no map.
- Which state has the most pickleball?
- Quintana Roo, with 17 recorded places. Per resident, among states with at least 5 places, Baja California Sur leads with 13.8 per million residents.
- Why is there so little pickleball data?
- Because the sport is new in Mexico and much of it is played on other sports' courts. OpenStreetMap has only 14 places tagged with pickleball; we researched the rest of the directory in public sources.
- How much does it cost to play pickleball in Mexico?
- We do not publish a price yet: no city has rates from at least 3 clubs in our data. It is charged per court hour, per person for open sessions or, in many parks, nothing at all.
